Hello, I’m Matt Walsh. I’m a head of journalism, media and performance at the University of Northampton.
I’ve worked as a journalist and executive producer in broadcast and digital media for more than 20 years.
In 1999 I joined ITN from the BBC as a reporter and rose to become deputy editor of the ITV News Channel.
I worked on stories such as the 9/11 attacks, the Iraq war and the 7/7 suicide bombings in London, and I also executive produced ITV’s coverage of the 2004 American presidential election and the 2005 budget.
After a short period advising David Cameron MP on broadcast media strategy, I moved to The Times in 2006 where I set-up its multimedia journalism department.
I also launched multiplatform broadcast and digital services for ITN and the NHS and I’ve worked around the world as both a consultant and trainer in broadcast and digital/social media journalism.
I still continue to combine teaching with consultancy and industry work, including regularly editing news programmes for Al Jazeera.
I’m also working on a PhD looking at the impact of social media on political journalism.
